A plurality favor President Donald Trump’s proposed $5,000 dividend for U.S. adults, a survey from the Economist/YouGov found.

The survey asked respondents, “Would you favor or oppose the government in Washington sending $5,000 to every adult citizen in the U.S.?” Notably, Trump floated this dividend during his speeches at the Republican midterm in Dallas.

\n\n

“If the Republicans win the House of Representatives and the United States Senate, both of them, because of our… tremendous economic success, like in history we’ve never had anything like what’s happening, but because of our tremendous strength and success economically, I will issue a dividend to every adult citizen in the United States of America for $5,000,” Trump said on the first night of the convention. He compared the dividend to “a successful company” doing a “cash distribution to its shareholders.”

Overall, 48 percent across the board support the government dividend, compared to 40 percent who oppose. Of those who favor the move, 30 percent back it “strongly,” while 18 percent “somewhat” favor the proposal.

There is a partisan divide, as 61 percent of Republicans say they favor the dividend, while 29 percent oppose. A plurality of Democrats, 48 percent, oppose the dividend, while 39…
