A key gauge of future inflation eased in October from September, indicating that the recent surge in inflation may prove to be short-lived.
\n\nBusiness inflation expectations, as tracked by the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta, declined from 2.4 percent for the year ahead to 2.3 percent. The Atlanta Fed’s survey measures the changes businesses expect in their own costs, which does not always translate directly into their selling prices.
\n\nBusiness inflation expectations are closely watched because firms tend to set prices and wages based on what they expect inflation to be in the future. When they think inflation will be higher, they tend to raise their own prices, making the expectations a somewhat self-fulfilling prophecy.
\n\nExpected increases in unit costs have declined considerably since their Bidenflation high of 3.8 percent in 2022 but remain above their pre-pandemic average, the Atlanta Fed said.
