A concussion expert has called the NFL’s Guardian Caps a “scam,” dismissing them as a mere placebo that does little to protect against head injuries.
\n\nGuardian Caps were added in 2023 as soft-shell pads that cover football helmets and are designed to absorb contact from heavy head hits.
\n\n“The league’s data showed that if one player is wearing the Guardian Cap at the time of a helmet hit, the cap will absorb 11 to 12 percent of the force. If both players are wearing the cap and have a helmet-to-helmet hit, the force of the impact is reduced by around 20 percent,” the NFL said after they were mandated the pads for the regular-season.
\n\nNFL Executive Vice President Jeff Miller also said at the time that “there was a 52 percent decrease in concussions among players wearing Guardian Caps, compared with the concussion rate for players at the same positions over the previous three years of training camps when Guardian Caps weren’t worn,” per BroBible.
