The New York Times-owned The Athletic seems to have a problem with strong women and is calling for the WNBA’s Indiana Fever to fire star player Sophie Cunningham because she is “too turbulent.”
\n\nColumnist Candace Buckner kicks off her attack on Cunningham by blaming the player for Enes Kanter Freedom’s efforts to expose the WNBA’s transgender policies and Indiana Attorney General Todd Rokita’s warnings that the WNBA’s trans policies could violate state laws aimed at protecting women.
\n\n“They all showed up to be part of a circus, not to enjoy a WNBA game. They attended solely to antagonize and amplify a nonexistent issue in this basketball league. All because of Sophie Cunningham,” she said, referencing a previous interview that Cunningham gave wherein she said that she does not think men pretending to be women should play in women’s sports.
\n\nBuckner goes on to claim that if the Fever wants to “go back to being a basketball team again,” then “Cunningham has to go.”
\n\nThe screedist rips Cunningham’s playing record, too.
\n\nGo to Chicago, or Portland. Or maybe Toronto could use a 30-year-old unrestricted free agent who averages fewer than 8 points a game, while her latest TikTok videos are good…
