The Jockey Club, which regulates the types of names horses can use before entering a race, has ruled that a particular horse named “Austrian Painter” must switch monikers due to a possible Hitler reference.
\n\nIt’s no secret that one of the most evil dictators in history tried his hand at painting in Vienna before ascending to become a megalomaniacal warlord hell-bent on murdering Jews and conquering all of Europe, so it’s a bit of a head-scratcher as to why jockeys for a particular thoroughbred thought “Austrian Painter” would not raise a few eyebrows.
\n\nThe Jockey Club received a complaint about the horse after it won its debut race at the Horseshoe Indianapolis track on Monday, per The Guardian:
\n\nScott Herbertson, the two-year-old’s owner and breeder, appeared to suggest on social media that the name was a reference to Austrian artist Gustav Klimt. The Jockey Club said Austrian Painter’s full sister, New Order, must also be renamed. As well as the well-known British rock band, New Order can refer to Nazi Germany’s plan for an occupied Europe. “New order is my favoured band you lune,” Herbertson wrote on social media.
