The Vatican will submit a documentary film for Oscar consideration for the first time in the Academy Awards’ 97-year history, Variety and official Vatican media reported this week.
\n\nGreen Lava is a 2025 documentary produced by the Vatican and co-directed by Lia Beltrami and Ali Aksu. The 39-minute documentary centers on the real life story of Giacomo Mattivi, a 22 year-old Italian man from the Dolomites who suffers from Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD), a rare genetic condition primary affecting males that causes progressive muscle degeneration and weakness, leading to significant deterioration of the skeletal, heart, and lung muscles. Giacomo’s brother, Mattia, suffered from the same rare condition and passed away in January 2022.
\n\nThe documentary is set to premiere at the Lumiere Music Hall in Beverly Hills, California on Friday, September 18 in Los Angeles, and screenings will run through September 24. The documentary was originally aired by the Vatican in Rome in January 2025, during the Jubilee of the World of Communications.
